Peugeot, a renowned French car manufacturer, has announced that they will be introducing a new steering wheel technology in their range starting in 2026. The product director, Jérôme Micheron, made this announcement on Friday at the Vivatech technology show in Paris. The company showcased the concept of a rectangular steering wheel design known as “Hypersquare” on their concept car.
The Hypersquare steering wheel design eliminates the need for a traditional steering column that mechanically connects the steering wheel to the wheels, instead using electronic connections. This new technology is called “steer by wire,” and it allows drivers to control the car with less effort and retains a sense of agility. With this steering wheel, drivers only need to make movements of 150 degrees to control the car.
Peugeot is known for its small steering wheels and plans to introduce this new rectangular steering wheel on a first series car in 2026 as part of renewing their range. Micheron stated that with this new system, drivers will adapt quickly to the new system. The Hypersquare steering wheel features four holes for buttons with functions like cruise control while the turn signal controls remain in their usual place behind the wheel.
