The New England Patriots have recently secured another key player by agreeing to a three-year contract extension with linebacker Jahlani Tavai, as reported by ESPN. The new deal includes a base value of $15 million with the potential to increase to $21 million. Originally drafted by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Tavai was released from the team’s roster at the beginning of the 2021 regular season.
He then joined the Patriots’ practice squad and has since remained with the team. Tavai had a standout season in 2023, recording 110 total tackles, five tackles for loss, four QB hits, one sack, and two interceptions. The Patriots have made a concerted effort this offseason to re-sign players who were approaching the end of their contracts. Tavai is the latest player to commit to a new deal, following in the footsteps of running back Rhamondre Stevenson, defensive tackle Christian Barmore, and center David Andrews.
Tavai was set to enter his final season under a two-year extension he signed in November 2023. However, this new contract will keep him with the Patriots through at least 2026. The team has been working hard to retain key players this offseason after missing out on several big-name free agents last year. By re-signing Tavai and other important contributors like Stevenson and Barmore, they are strengthening their roster and setting themselves up for success in future seasons.
