Rodney Harrison, a legend of the New England Patriots, recently gave some advice to the team as they begin a new era with quarterback Drake Maye taking over the starting role. The last time the Patriots had a rookie quarterback start was in 2021 with Mac Jones. He won the starting job after a training camp battle with Cam Newton. However, Harrison believes that the team should take a different approach with Maye.
During an appearance on “The Eye on Foxborough,” Harrison suggested that the team should not immediately throw Maye into the starting role. Instead, he recommended starting Jacoby Brissett first. By allowing Maye to learn and observe from the sidelines, he can be better prepared to step in if needed.
Harrison emphasized the tough defenses that Maye would be facing in the first six weeks of the season and believed that it would be wise for him to get some experience before being thrown into action.
Despite Maye’s impressive performances in spring practices, it would be wise for the Patriots to let him continue to learn and develop before putting him in a starting role. Brissett has acknowledged Maye’s progress and development, which bodes well for the team’s future.
Taking the time to ensure that Maye is fully prepared will benefit the Patriots in the long run as they aim to get the quarterback development process right this time around.
