Outpatient Joint Replacement Surgery for Femoral Head Necrosis: A Revolutionary Approach to Rapid Recovery and Improved Outcomes

Hip replacement surgery has become an effective solution for patients with femoral head necrosis, a serious complication of femoral bone diseases. With the help of minimally invasive surgical techniques, patients can now recover quickly and leave the hospital within 24 hours of surgery. Dr. Nguyen Quang Ton Quyen, Deputy Department of Trauma and Orthopedics at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi, explains how joint replacement surgery was once considered risky and required extended hospital stays of 5-7 days. However, with modern minimally invasive techniques, patients can now leave the hospital after just one night stay post-surgery and may even be discharged the next day.

The key factors that make outpatient joint replacement surgery possible are less general anesthesia use, minimally invasive surgical techniques such as DAA, ABMS, Bikini, and Superpath incisions that reduce procedure time and blood loss, and improved physical therapy and rehabilitation protocols that allow patients to stand up and walk within hours after surgery. This facilitates faster recovery and reduces complications.

For example, Mr. Hoa and Mr. Truong both underwent outpatient hip replacement surgeries at Tam Anh General Hospital with successful outcomes. However, not all patients are suitable candidates for outpatient surgery, and careful consideration is given based on various factors such as age, health status, and support system.

Before discharge, doctors provide patients with instructions on home care and prescribe appropriate physical therapy exercises to reduce joint stiffness, manage pain, improve strength and flexibility. Continued exercise is essential for a smoother recovery process and reducing complications. Patients can gradually return to normal activities with reduced pain and improved mobility within a few weeks for younger patients or a few months for elderly patients who require more time to heal completely.
