Organ Donation from Brain-Dead Donor Saves Lives: A New Model for Transplant Surgery in Phu Tho Province

In a tragic incident, a 58-year-old man passed away from brain death following a traffic accident. Eventually, two individuals with severe kidney failure at Hue Central Hospital were identified as recipients for the kidney transplants.

On June 20, following proper procedures for organ preservation, the transplant team flew to Hue with the donated kidneys. With the assistance of traffic police, they safely transported the organs to the hospital for prompt transplantation. By the next morning, both recipients’ kidney function had returned to normal, marking a successful transplant operation.

This organ donation from a brain-dead donor was a significant milestone for Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital as they had previously only performed transplants from living blood-matched donors. This new model of organ donation expands available sources of organs and allows more patients to receive life-saving treatments.
