Olympic Champ Pidcock Strikes a Balance: Defending his 2021 Olympic Cross-Country Race Title in Tokyo”.

2 min read

Elite men’s cross country race at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo is just around the corner, and Tom Pidcock, the defending champion of both mountain bike World and Olympic Championships, is preparing to defend his title. In an interview with Cycling Weekly, Pidcock shared how he is balancing his training to ensure he is ready for both the Tour de France and the mountain bike competitions.

Pidcock has decided to add an extra World Cup race to his schedule, participating in the UCI MTB World Cup round in Crans Montana on June 23. This comes just a few days before he starts the Tour de France in Florence on June 29. While focusing more on longer efforts and volume for the Tour de France, he also understands the importance of maintaining his off-road skills.

Despite racing in a limited number of cyclocross events and skipping the UCI Cyclocross World Championships, Pidcock managed to secure a victory in a mountain bike race in February at the Supercup Massi La Nuca in Spain. His spring campaign was briefly interrupted by a crash before he won the Amstel Gold Race and then took a break from road racing.

Pidcock participated in the Nove Mesto MTB World Cup at the end of May, where he beat top Swiss riders to win the elite men’s cross country race. His approach to balancing road and mountain bike races is similar to his strategy leading up to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, where he won a gold medal.
