New Leadership Elected at The Academy of Arts in Berlin: Composer and Installation Artist Manos Tsangaris and Architecture Journalist Anh-Linh Ngo Appointed as President and Vice President.

The Academy of Arts in Berlin has appointed new leadership with the election of composer and installation artist Manos Tsangaris as its new president, and architecture journalist Anh-Linh Ngo as vice president for a three-year term. Both were elected with a large majority, as announced by the academy on Saturday. Tsangaris has been a member of the academy in the music section since 2009 and previously served as director from 2012 to 2021.

Tsangaris, who is 67 years old, hails from Düsseldorf but currently resides in Cologne. He studied at the music academy in Cologne from 1976 to 1983 under Mauricio Kagel and Christoph Caskel. Tsangaris’ works are performed at various festivals and theaters around the world, and he is also known for his poetry, prose texts, and visual art. Since 2016, Tsangaris has co-directed the Munich Biennale for New Music Theater and has been a professor of composition at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden since 2009. He has received several awards, including the Mauricio Kagel Music Prize.

The Academy of Arts was founded in 1696 and is one of the oldest European cultural institutes. It is divided into six sections: Fine Arts, Architecture, Music, Literature, Film and Media Arts, and Art Education. Jeanine Meerapfel and Kathrin Röggla stepped down as president and vice president after serving nine years as they did not plan for a fourth term according to the academy’s statutes.
