New KSU Director Brings Fresh Perspective to Building a Global Grain and Food Innovation Hub

Kansas State University’s College of Agriculture has welcomed Dr. Joseph Awika as the new head of the Department of Grain Science and Industry and director of the International Grain Program Institute. He will also serve as the director of the Food Science Institute, bringing his expertise in food science to KSU.

Dr. Awika is an internationally recognized food scientist who has a Ph.D. in food science and technology from Texas A&M University, where he was previously the head of the Department of Food Science and Technology. His undergraduate degree is from Egerton University in Kenya. Dr. Awika has received numerous awards for his research and teaching, including the IFT achievement award for International Food Security in 2021 and the Excellence in Teaching Award from the American Association of Cereal Chemists International in 2016.

KSU Research and Extension Dean Ernie Minton expressed excitement about working with Dr. Awika and supporting his vision for the department, highlighting his excellence in research and teaching as crucial for enhancing KSU’s programs in grain and food sciences. The new Global Center for Grain and Food Innovation, which will be completed by fall 2026, is expected to continue this tradition of excellence by providing a hub for innovation in grain and food industries worldwide.

Dr. Awika takes over from Hulya Dogan, who served as interim department head for two years after Gordon Smith led the department from 2015-2022, specializing in milling, baking, feed, and pet food industries. Dr. Awika’s leadership is expected to continue this tradition while contributing to KSU’s momentum towards becoming a global hub for grain and food innovation.
