Since 2018, Hummer Sports Park in Topeka has been unable to host postseason track and field meets due to wear and tear on the track at Weaver-Erwin Stadium. As a result, USD 501 took action and passed an agenda item to repair and resurface the track on May 16. The project began on Tuesday and the resurfacing work is now underway, with completion expected in mid-to-late August.
The development of the track resurfacing project is being led by McConnell and Associates from North Kansas City, Missouri. The estimated cost of the project is $1,213,390, with the majority of the expense going towards improving the steeplechase, javelin, high jump, and long jump pits. Funding for the project is coming from the Hummer Sports Park’s endowment as well as the operations budget of the sports park.
This is the first restoration project for the track since its establishment in 2003. The school board highlighted concerns about disrupting the infield and the potential impact on the football field if
