A new survey published today on the CBS news network sheds light on the impact of the televised confrontation between Joe Biden and Donald Trump at the end of last week. The results are concerning for Biden’s candidacy, with 72% of respondents indicating that he lacks the cognitive skills necessary to serve as president for a second term. This is a significant increase compared to February, when only 49% of respondents held this view.
The survey also reveals that three out of four respondents think that Biden should not have run in the first place, a significant increase from February. Among Democrats, there has been a 10% decrease in those who believe that Biden should run for president now compared to last February. The reasons for this lack of confidence in Biden were defined by CBS as “tragic,” with 86% of respondents citing his age as a reason not to run, 71% expressing fear about his decisions, and 66% questioning his ability to mount an effective campaign.
Despite this gap in credibility reputations between the candidates, it appears that most Americans do not think either candidate is telling the truth. When asked which contestant told the truth during the televised debate over the weekend, only 40% said they believed Joe Biden was telling the truth and 32% thought Trump told the truth. Additionally, 45% of respondents believe that the Trump administration will benefit them financially, while only 19% believe that same about the Biden administration.
As for what should happen next, despite these alarming data points for Biden, most Democratic voters still believe he should continue his campaign: 55% answered yes while 45% said he should step down from office. According to NBC News, Biden will hold a discussion with his family today on whether to retire, although he stated last week that he had no intention of doing so and appeared at an election rally in North Carolina over Friday night where he addressed discrimination suffered after his poor performance against former President Donald Trump.
