New Blood in the Russian Defense Ministry: Anna Tsivileva and Other Officials Appointed by President Putin

On Monday, June 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed several new officials to the Russian Defense Ministry. Among them was Anna Tsivileva, who was named Deputy Minister of Defense. Tsivileva is known to be the cousin of President Putin and her father, Yevgeny Mikhailovich Putin, was also a cousin of Putin on his father’s side before he passed away in March of this year.

Tsivileva had previously moved from Ivanovo to Moscow after Vladimir Putin rose to power. In April 2023, she took on the role of leading the state fund to provide support for participants in the “special military operation” (SVO) called “Defenders of the Fatherland.” Her husband, Sergei, previously served as the governor of the Kemerovo region until May 2024, when he was appointed as Minister of Energy.

In addition to Tsivileva, Oleg Savelyev and Pavel Fradkov were also appointed as deputy ministers of defense by decrees of the President of the Russian Federation. Leonid Gornin was appointed as the first deputy minister as well. These latest decrees have increased the number of deputies in the Russian Defense Ministry to a total of 12.
