New Allegan County Health Officer Brings Passion, Education and Transparency to the Position

On April 25, the Allegan County Board of Commissioners unanimously appointed Jacqueline Billette as the county’s next health officer. Billette’s appointment is pending final approval from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services in accordance with state law. With her commitment to public health and a passion for making a difference in her communities, Billette is expected to start her new role on Monday, April 29.

Billette received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English and a master’s degree in public health from Central Michigan University. During her interview with commissioners, she emphasized the importance of community education and relationship-building in public health initiatives. She believes that education is key in empowering individuals to make informed decisions regarding their own health and lifestyle.

Billette also stressed the significance of transparency, clear communication, and listening to concerns as vital components of her upcoming role. The former health officer, Angelique Joynes, resigned in January after serving for a decade. Out of over 20 applicants for the position, five or six were interviewed by county officials before Billette was selected for the role.

County Administrator Rob Sarro expressed his satisfaction with the selection process, stating that he expects a quick approval process from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Commissioner Dean Kapenga praised the thoroughness of the process and expressed his confidence in Billette’s ability to lead Allegan County towards promoting public health effectively.

The appointment of Jacqueline Billette as Allegan County’s new health officer reflects a diligent hiring process led by county officials and demonstrates their commitment to promoting public health in the community.
