Gardnerville businesses are feeling the brunt of a major road construction project that began in September 2023. The Nevada Department of Transportation is working on improvements to Highway 395 N, including drainage, sidewalk, curb, gutter enhancements and utility relocation. The project is expected to continue through 2024, with the repaving of portions of Highway 395 in downtown Gardnerville.
Local business owners along Main Street were given only a week’s notice about the construction that would affect them for at least a year. Heather Leonard, owner of Brown Bear Designs, is feeling the impact as her revenue has decreased by 35%, causing her to enter “panic mode.” The lack of foot traffic due to the construction has been a major hurdle for the business owners on Main Street.
Marissa Mills, owner of Luminary Books, is also struggling to attract customers due to the construction. She has been hosting after-hours parties and set up an online shop to reach customers who are avoiding the area. Despite the challenges, both Leonard and Mills are determined to weather the construction phase and hope for community support to sustain their businesses.
While they acknowledge the importance of the road improvements for the town, the business owners emphasize the need for continued support during this challenging time. Leonard and Mills are optimistic that once the construction is completed, downtown Gardnerville will thrive with new life and energy. In the meantime, they are taking creative measures to stay afloat and urge the community to shop local and support small businesses like theirs.
