The University of Michigan Health system is poised to make a significant investment in Oakland County with the purchase of vacant land at the former Kmart headquarters in Troy. The 7.8-acre property, located at 3100 West Big Beaver Road, is being purchased for $4.42 million from Forbes/Frankel Troy Ventures LLC and is expected to be approved by the University of Michigan Board of Regents at their upcoming meeting.
Michigan Medicine’s CEO, Marschall Runge, has stated that this purchase is just the beginning of a broader presence in southeast Michigan, with plans to create a network of care that allows easy access to world-class healthcare for residents statewide.
The former Kmart headquarters has remained vacant for over 15 years and was set for demolition last fall. However, the University of Michigan Health system’s purchase is seen as a way to bring their expertise to a new community of patients and offer easier access to their innovative clinical programs, including multi-disciplinary cancer care. David Miller, the president of U-M Health, expressed excitement about the expansion into Troy and anticipated the new facility’s role in bringing advanced and innovative clinical programs to the region.
The new facility will focus on advanced specialty and diagnostic services and aims to expand specialty clinical services and patient access in Oakland County. With this move, the University of Michigan Health system continues its commitment to providing exceptional healthcare services throughout Michigan.
