With around 50% of respondents voting for Obama and only 39% for Trump, her lead is significant. This stands in contrast to Vice President Joe Biden, who was neck and neck with Trump at 40% each.
While other potential Democratic candidates such as Vice President Kamala Harris, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer all polled lower than Trump in the same survey, Michelle Obama’s popularity and potential to win against him have made her a standout candidate. However, despite her influence and support from many Americans, she has consistently stated that she will not run for president. Her communications director confirmed this in a recent statement to NBC News.
Despite not standing for office, Michelle Obama has been a highly influential figure in American politics and has expressed her support for President Biden and Vice President Harris. While Biden has spoken highly of Obama and has stated he would choose her as his running mate if she decided to run, it is unlikely that she will enter the race.
Michelle Obama’s presence in the 2020 election cycle was expected to bolster support for Biden, but former President Barack Obama, her husband, has also supported him while acknowledging the challenges he may face in this election following a tough debate performance.
