The New York Mets have announced the addition of a new left-handed reliever to their roster. According to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo, Tyler Jay has been called up by the team and will be making his big league debut.
Dedniel Nunez, who made his big league debut against the Braves on Tuesday in Atlanta, is being replaced on the 26-man roster by Jay. Nunez had an impressive debut, striking out three batters and allowing just one run on mostly soft contact in two innings of work. However, with Nunez unavailable to pitch after his workload on Tuesday, the Mets needed fresh arms in the bullpen and are turning to Jay to fill that role.
The Mets’ bullpen has seen some recent changes, with Michael Tonkin and Yohan Ramirez – both Opening Day members – being designated for assignment. Jay, 29, was selected by the Minnesota Twins with the No. 6 pick in the 2015 MLB Draft but has since taken a winding road to the big leagues. He has converted from a starter to mainly a reliever, with stints at various teams including the Cincinnati Reds and the independent Frontier League’s Joliet Slammers.
After spending the 2022 and 2023 seasons with Joliet, Jay was signed by the Mets last August 25th. If and when Jay gets the chance to play, he will be making his big league debut.
