Mercer University has received a $134,197 grant from the National Science Foundation to establish a Grow-Your-Own (GYO) program, with Wiregrass Tech playing a key role as a partner in the initiative. The GYO program, led by Mercer’s Tift College of Education, aims to recruit and support future Computer Science teacher candidates in rural communities.
Wiregrass Tech has been instrumental in identifying and recruiting potential Computer Science teachers among the student populations of eight rural school districts in Georgia. Dr. Susie Morrissey, an Assistant Professor at Mercer’s Tift College of Education, expressed gratitude for the funding of this project and emphasized the importance of creating a program to support students interested in teaching Computer Science in their rural districts.
The grant will enable Mercer to provide financial and academic support to students who are interested in pursuing careers in Computer Science teaching. The program will also provide opportunities for students to receive hands-on experience working with computers and technology, which will help them develop the skills they need to succeed as teachers.
