The County of Maui Office of Economic Development (OED) recently released the results of its Maui Business Health Check survey. The survey, conducted from January to February 2024, received responses from 290 businesses, providing valuable insights into the challenges faced by the Maui business community in the aftermath of the wildfires that occurred in August 2023.
Initiated by OED, the Maui Business Health Check survey aimed to collect feedback from businesses directly and indirectly impacted by the wildfires. The goal was to gain a better understanding of the obstacles businesses are facing and identify areas where additional support and resources are needed. Among the 290 participants, 106 businesses were from Lahaina, representing a variety of industries including tourism and hospitality, retail, food and beverage, and arts, culture, and entertainment.
The survey covered a range of topics such as commercial leases, financial assistance, taxes, marketing, communications, infrastructure, and rebuilding. Luana Mahi, OED director, expressed gratitude to the businesses that took part in the survey, recognizing their contributions in providing crucial feedback. She emphasized the importance of understanding the current needs of businesses and using their input to work towards solutions that will aid in the recovery of the island.
