Lega Leaders Clash over Autonomy and Efficiency in Italian Regions: Veneto vs Lombardy

2 min read

Veneto Region is seeking to reopen discussions with the government regarding the transfer of competences on nine matters where Essential Levels of Performance (Lep) are not defined. However, Nello Musumeci, leader of Lega in Lombardy, is opposed to this request. He believes that there are “problems of opportunity” within the majority coalition and among the Regions of Southern Italy.

Musumeci emphasizes the importance of all regions starting from the same line regarding autonomy. He urges Zaia, leader of Lega in Veneto, to focus on identifying the Lep before proceeding with negotiations. Musumeci stresses that a fair and equal process should be followed for all regions.

On the other hand, Zaia is determined to move forward and cites the law on differentiated autonomy as a reason for doing so. He believes that this law will benefit citizens by enabling faster response to disastrous events within regional territories. However, Musumeci clarifies his position in support of differentiated autonomy while emphasizing the importance of defining the Lep first.

The Lega secretariat also supports Zaia while criticizing Musumeci’s resistance to progress and efficiency brought by autonomy. At the same time, Fontana of Lombardy plans to negotiate his own transfer request with the government. The negotiation process is expected to begin between the State and Veneto Region, with significant involvement from Prime Minister Conte. The evolution of negotiations will be closely monitored as key decisions are made regarding autonomy in regions like Veneto and Lombardy.
