Lake Erie College Receives $500,000 Award to Boost Health-Science Initiatives

2 min read

Lake Erie College has recently received a significant boost to its health-science initiatives with a $500,000 award from the Ohio Senate. This funding, part of the Capital Budget proposal Senate Bill 292, will support the college in renovating and expanding lab spaces, introducing new majors, and prioritizing the addition of an exercise science program. The goal is to complement existing health science offerings and provide pathways for students interested in careers such as physical and exercise therapy, sports medicine, and more.

The college is planning to begin the search for founding faculty members in the coming months and launch the exercise science program in the fall of 2025. Johnathan Tedesco, dean of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, highlighted that the new major will build on Lake Erie’s existing program offerings in nutrition and biology. The college’s strong science curriculum will support the program and provide opportunities for collaboration with Lakeland Community College, local businesses, and community organizations in developing programs that meet the region’s needs.

President Jennifer Schuller expressed gratitude for State Rep. Jamie Callender and State Sen. Jerry Cirino’s key roles in securing this funding for Lake Erie College. She noted that the project will help attract new students and faculty members while keeping the college competitive. The investment in campus facilities reflects the college’s commitment to offering high-quality, in-demand programs that prepare graduates for success in the health care sector.
