The Keweenaw Community Foundation recently awarded $5,000 in grant funds from the Herman Gundlach Fund and Funding Youth Initiatives to support the Copper Country ISD Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. The grant specifically supports the CTE Construction Technology program and the Home Building Project.
Keweenaw Community Foundation Executive Director Robin Mennguzzo highlights the importance of the project in allowing students to contribute to the community and develop skills necessary for their future success. According to Mennguzzo, “This project is a great example of how community collaboration can address challenges and support community needs.”
In addition to Construction Technology students, students from the CTE Graphic Arts and Marketing and Business and Entrepreneurship programs will also be involved in the later stages of the project. They will create informational signage and work with real estate agents to learn about the process of selling a home. Throughout the home-building project, students will develop important financial and technical skills that can benefit them in future careers.
CTE Director Corey Soumis emphasizes the program’s goal of enhancing students’ skills for their future careers. According to Soumis, “The program seeks out projects that benefit the community while providing valuable learning experiences for students.” By working on building a home from scratch, Construction Technology students will have an opportunity to apply their knowledge in a practical setting while gaining hands-on experience with local contractors and businesses already involved in the project.
