On Monday, Israeli forces carried out a surprise raid on Khan Yunis in the eastern part of Gaza. This move caused residents who had just returned to their homes to flee once again. The attack left many families devastated as over 200 bodies were discovered in mass graves at the Nasser Medical Complex, Gaza’s main hospital.
Israel had withdrawn most of its ground forces from southern Gaza after a long and intense battle. However, when residents started returning home, they found their neighborhoods destroyed with bodies scattered throughout the streets. Many families were forced to flee again as tanks entered the area under heavy gunfire.
The conflict in Gaza has resulted in over 34,000 Palestinian deaths, with thousands more missing and feared buried under debris. Emergency workers recovered bodies from mass graves at the Nasser Hospital site, where Israeli forces claimed they had been forced to fight inside the hospital against Hamas fighters.
Relatives arrived at the cemetery to claim their loved ones’ remains for reburial, including Osama Al-Shoubji whose body was retrieved from the hospital. His wife Sumaya found solace in burying him next to his sister whom he had donated a kidney too. The scene was somber as Sumaya held flowers and her daughter recalled her father’s love for them.
In other parts of Gaza, air strikes continued on Rafah where doctors performed a caesarean section on a mother who was killed while trying to give birth in her home due to lack of medical facilities caused by Israeli attacks.
Furthermore, an air strike destroyed Nuseirat Hospital’s solar panels that were responsible for providing energy source for the hospital which further worsened healthcare services situation for civilians living nearby.
The war in Gaza continues to take a toll on civilians with many families losing their loved ones and homes amidst ongoing violence and destruction.
