Independence Health System is marking Donate Life Month in April by recognizing patients waiting for organ donations. The hospitals participating in this initiative include Frick in Mt. Pleasant, Latrobe, and Westmoreland in Greensburg, who will begin the month with a flag-raising ceremony on Friday. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Carol Fox believes that the health system is uniquely positioned to inspire the community to become organ donors. By encouraging more people to donate, they can better serve their mission of advocating for the well-being of the entire community.
In addition to the flag-raising ceremony, the health system will also mark Blue and Green Day on April 12th, a national day of recognition for organ donations. Staff members will wear blue and green to work to show their support. Furthermore, a private flag-raising event will be held at the Butler Memorial Hospital intensive care unit. According to the Center for Organ Recovery Education, over 100,000 individuals nationwide are waiting for organ transplants, with approximately 7,000 of them residing in the state.
