Holiday Driving Booms in Spain Despite Fluctuating Weather and Rising Gasoline Prices

This holiday season, Spanish roads are bustling with traffic despite the unpredictable weather. According to estimates, at least 16.5 million trips will be taken during this time period. As a result, gasoline and diesel prices have seen a slight increase.

The cost of gasoline has been rising for ten consecutive weeks and is now close to last Easter’s prices, while diesel prices are only slightly higher compared to the same time last year. At the start of the second phase of Operation Exit, gasoline costs 1.63 euros per liter, which represents an increase of 1.24% from the previous week. Diesel prices have also risen slightly to 1.5 euros per liter, which is just 0.52% more than seven days ago. Despite these increases, both fuels remain much lower than their peak prices in the summer of 2022.

Drivers who plan on filling up their tanks before their trips will find that gasoline costs around 88.88 euros for a full tank, which is slightly cheaper than last Easter’s prices but still higher than last year’s price by about 7 cents per liter or roughly €16 total for a full tank of gasoline. Diesel will cost around €84.26 for a full tank, which is about €17 cents more expensive than in 2023 but still much cheaper than in other European countries where fuel taxes are higher due to government regulations and trade agreements with oil-producing countries like Russia and OPEC members.

In terms of traffic volume, Spain has seen an increase of around 4% from last year during this holiday exodus that started on Friday and ends on Monday of next week.

While some drivers may feel concerned about rising fuel prices ahead of their holidays, it’s important to remember that Spain still has cheaper fuel prices compared to the Eurozone average due to its lower tax burden and lower raw material costs.

Overall, despite fluctuating weather conditions and rising fuel prices, it seems that many Spaniards are eager to take advantage of this long weekend and hit the roads for some well-deserved relaxation and family bonding time!
