The Hampton Roads Convention Center was a hive of activity on Monday night as athletes from different eras were celebrated for their achievements. The Peninsula Sports Club hosted the 74th Annual Headliner’s Night to recognize local collegiate and high school athletes for their athletic accomplishments, as well as their academic contributions. Six high school students were awarded college scholarships during the event.
One of the standout moments of the evening was the recognition of Hampton native Tyrod Taylor as the Peninsula Sports Club Sportsperson of the Year. Taylor has had an illustrious career in high school, college, and the NFL. In high school, he led the Hampton Crabbers to a state title in 2005 and had an impressive record over four varsity seasons. While studying at Virginia Tech, Taylor was inducted into the Virginia Tech Hall of Fame and named ACC Player of the Year in 2010. He also played a key role in leading the Hokies to three ACC Championships.
Taylor is currently entering his thirteenth season in the NFL and is playing for the New York Jets. Previously, he won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens and made a Pro-Bowl appearance with the Buffalo Bills as their Quarterback in 2015.
