Ground Warden: MBDA’s Revolutionary AI Tool for Accurate Target Detection in Combat Environments

2 min read

European defense firm MBDA has unveiled a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool called the “Ground Warden” that enables military units to detect hidden targets in combat environments. This man-portable module uses beyond line-of-sight technology to accurately detect targets and suggest attack options to missile operators. By analyzing data collected from surveillance drones, the Ground Warden helps with precise target interception and provides guidance to missile operators on how to hit the target effectively. The tool is designed to be easy to use, with no additional modifications required before deployment.

During the Eurosatory 2024 defense exhibition in Paris, MBDA showcased the capabilities of the Ground Warden. In one scenario, a surveillance drone identified an enemy tank in a village and relayed the information to an artillery unit for a missile strike. The tool helped identify additional hidden targets beyond the line of sight, leading to successful subsequent attacks.

In another simulation, the Ground Warden was paired with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to provide enhanced insights to the gunner. By analyzing data from the drone in a densely vegetated area, the AI-enabled system accurately pinpointed the location of a target, aiding the gunner in making precise hits. Despite utilizing AI for battlefield analysis, MBDA ensures that a human remains in the loop to oversee operations and ensure safety. Program lead Laurent Duport emphasized the importance of human oversight, citing that AI technology is not yet mature enough to operate independently. Thanks to this collaboration between humans and AI, the Ground Warden has reportedly helped the French Army achieve a 100 percent strike rate.

The Ground Warden is not only an effective tool for military units but also offers significant benefits for civilian organizations such as law enforcement agencies and emergency responders who operate in hazardous environments.

Overall, MBDA’s introduction of this new AI tool marks a significant step forward in improving military capabilities and enhancing operational effectiveness during combat situations.
