Grapevine’s Pleasant Glade Pool is set to take part in a global event aimed at preventing drownings. On June 20, 2024, the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson will be held at various waterparks, aquatic centers and swim schools across 19 countries on six continents. The event marks its 15th anniversary with over 39,000 participants expected to participate.
Chris Smith, Director for Grapevine Parks and Recreation expressed his excitement about being part of the initiative. He emphasized the importance of water safety and the commitment to providing the community with the necessary knowledge and skills to stay safe in and around water. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4 in the U.S., with an increase in recent years according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Over 4,500 people drowned each year from 2020-2022, representing an increase compared to 2019. In 2022, drowning among children ages 1-4 increased by 28% compared to 2019.
The event will offer free swimming lessons conducted by certified instructors who will teach fundamental water safety skills like proper breathing techniques, floating, and basic swimming strokes. The goal is to instill confidence in the water and encourage ongoing participation in swimming lessons. Families are invited to attend starting at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Glade Pool located at 1805 Hall-Johnson Road in Grapevine, TX 76051. Registration is free on-site and open to individuals of all ages.
