On Saturday at approximately 1:05 p.m., a member of the Göttingen state parliament, Marie Kollenrott, was attacked by a man in downtown Göttingen during an election campaign event in the busy pedestrian zone near the Old Town Hall. The politician suffered minor injuries to her arms in the attack.
According to police, the incident occurred after a short political discussion with the victim, during which the man suddenly approached her and hit her several times on the upper body before walking away. The 39-year-old Kollenrott told the Göttinger Tageblatt that she had scratches and a red arm and was in shock.
Fortunately, several people intervened when the man attacked her, preventing the situation from escalating even further. Marie Kollenrott and a witness followed the man and alerted the police, who were able to apprehend him near the crime scene.
Kollenrott has been a member of the state parliament since 2021, serving on the Committee on Environment, Energy, Construction, and Climate Protection. The attack serves as a reminder of the risks that politicians face in carrying out their duties.
