Global Health Summit: Tackling Future Pandemics with New Accord and Strengthened Regulations

At the Seventy-seventh World Health Assembly in Geneva, governments are coming together to discuss ways to enhance the world’s ability to prevent and respond to future pandemics. The World Health Assembly (WHA) acknowledged the progress made by Member States in developing a pandemic agreement and strengthening the International Health Regulations (IHR, 2005) over the past two years.

In today’s session, the WHA focused on agenda item 13.4 regarding the draft pandemic agreement. Delegates recognized the extensive work carried out by the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) and the Bureau to develop the world’s first pandemic accord since the process began in December 2021. Member States emphasized the importance of a pandemic agreement based on principles of equity, sovereignty, and comprehensive preparedness and response to protect future generations from the impact of future pandemics.

Additionally, agenda item 13.3 addressed the negotiation of amendments to the IHR (2005) to incorporate lessons learned from the global response to COVID-19. Member States stressed the significance of updated and strengthened International Health Regulations to ensure global health security. The WHA delegates are committed to advancing both the pandemic agreement and the amendments to the IHR to better prepare for and respond to future public health emergencies.
