From Scandal to Success: Britain’s World Athletics Relays Team Gears Up for Redemption

2 min read

Great Britain’s squad for the World Athletics Relays is set to take place in the Bahamas on 4-5 May, and includes sprinter CJ Ujah for the first time since serving a doping ban. Ujah was banned for 22 months after testing positive for two prohibited substances at the Tokyo Olympics, but he was cleared of intentionally doping.

The men’s 4x100m relay squad includes Ujah, alongside Zharnel Hughes, Richard Kilty, and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake. Another member of the Tokyo squad, Reece Prescod, also makes the cut despite quitting the relay team before last year’s World Championships in Budapest. The head of sprints, hurdles, and relays for UK Athletics expressed confidence in the squad’s motivation and commitment to working together.

Among the women, Asha Philip and Imani-Lara Lansiquot from the Tokyo bronze medal-winning quartet are named in the squad. However, Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita are not included. At the World Championships in Budapest last summer, Britain won medals in mixed 4x400m, women’s 4x100m and 4x400m events as well as men’s 4x400m events. The full squad includes a mix of experienced athletes and newcomers all aiming to secure a spot at Paris 2024.

Britain has a rich history of success in track and field at world championships level with numerous medals won over many years. With this new team gearing up to compete on a global stage once again they will be looking to add more accolades to their collection.

Ujah serves as an inspiration for many young athletes who aspire to reach greatness in their sporting careers. His story serves as a reminder that no matter how tough things may seem it is always possible to come back stronger than before.

With only one week left until the start of World Athletics Relays it is clear that this team has put in a lot of hard work and dedication into making it onto this stage. The excitement builds as we eagerly await what this team will achieve on home soil.
