From PlayStation to iPhone: The Rise of PPSSPP and Its Impressive List of Classic Games

2 min read

The PSP emulator for iPhone, PPSSPP, has been developed by Henrik Rydgård and is now available on the App Store. This app, which has been in development for over a decade, can be downloaded for free on iPhone and iPad. For those who want to support the project financially, a paid version of PPSSPP is also available for 4.99 euros.

One of the most popular games released in 2005 are Valkyria Chronicles II, Patapon, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. These games are now considered immortal classics on their respective platforms.

PPSSPP has some limitations compared to previous builds of the app due to Apple’s restrictions on Just-in-Time (JIT) recompilers. However, iOS devices are generally fast enough to run almost any PSP game. Unfortunately, support for the iPad’s Magic Keyboard has been removed due to an undocumented API issue. However, Rydgård assured users that this feature will return in the future. Additionally, support for the Vulkan graphics API will be re-implemented with a native Metal backend.

Some of the most famous games available for the platform include Valkyria Chronicles II, Patapon, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.
