The Philadelphia Health Department, along with the Montgomery County and Pennsylvania departments, issued a warning on Monday about possible measles exposures in the region. Officials are urging people to be cautious about three locations where measles could have been contracted: a CVS pharmacy at 10901 Bustleton Avenue in Philadelphia and the Holy Redeemer Hospital emergency department and medical-surgical unit in Meadowbrook, Pennsylvania.
The outbreak of measles that began late in 2023 in the Philadelphia area infected nine people, including six children. However, health officials do not believe there is a risk to the public from this particular case of measles. Nonetheless, they are recommending that individuals who plan to travel outside the U.S. speak with their healthcare providers about any vaccinations they might need before departing. Those who were at the locations mentioned above should ensure they are protected against measles by being up to date on their MMR vaccine.
Measles is caused by a virus and is highly contagious, making it essential to take precautions when traveling or visiting public places. Fortunately, protection against measles is included in the MMR vaccine, which is typically given to children in two doses during early childhood development. Adults can also receive this vaccine if needed as part of an overall strategy for preventing the spread of infectious diseases globally.
