From Farmland to High-Tech: The Rise of Huairou Science City

In 2017, Huairou Science City, an empty suburb with farmland, received approval to be transformed into a high-tech and innovation hub located an hour’s drive from central Beijing. Over the span of seven years, the area has become home to more than 37 science facilities, including six major national scientific and technological institutions. Today, Huairou Science City is recognized as one of the most concentrated areas for cutting-edge scientific research in China.

The city has successfully attracted over 23,000 leading researchers from around the world. Among them are 77 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as 28 highly cited international scientists and more than 600 foreign experts. This rapid development is part of Beijing’s broader initiative to create a dynamic science center that combines fundamental research, technological services, and innovation to enhance the country’s global competitiveness.

Huairou Science City is specifically highlighted as one of the four science centers in China’s 14th Five-Year Plan. The plan outlines national economic and social development goals and long-term objectives through 2035. The city is expected to continue its growth and become a major hub for scientific breakthroughs in China and beyond.
