The Detroit Lions had a successful 2023 season, finishing with a record of 12-5 and winning the NFC North division. However, their season came to an end in the NFC championship game. As they head into the NFL Draft, they have draft picks in each round, with their first pick coming at No. 29.
Heading into the draft, the Lions have identified their top needs as a secondary pass rusher, interior offensive lineman, kicker, and wide receiver. While they have addressed some defensive needs in free agency, they are looking to strengthen their roster further through the draft, particularly at the kicker position.
The Lions could benefit from selecting a top kicker like Cam Little in the upcoming draft. With so much offensive firepower on their roster, adding a reliable kicker could be a key piece to their playoff aspirations. In recent years, the team has struggled with inconsistent kicking and this could be a chance to rectify that issue.
On Day 1 of the draft, the Lions may look at Chop Robinson from Penn State as an edge rusher who could help them bolster their defense. On Day 2, Keon Coleman from Florida State could be an option for them as a wide receiver to fill their needs at that position. Additionally Dominick Puni from Kansas may be considered for them as an offensive lineman to help strengthen that area of their lineup.
Looking back on previous years’ drafts; The Lions received a low grade initially but proved critics wrong with their selections in 2023 which included running back Jahmyr Gibbs who made immediate impacts as a rookie along with linebacker Jack Campbell tight end Sam LaPorta and safety Brian Branch leading them being seen as having one of the best drafts in the NFL for 2023
