A case involving the alleged misappropriation of valuable jewels given to former President Jair Bolsonaro by Arab countries has led to charges being filed against him. After a thorough investigation, twelve individuals, including Bolsonaro, have been accused of crimes such as appropriation of public property, money laundering, and criminal association.
The police report on this matter will be sent to Supreme Court magistrate Alexander de Moraes for further examination. If there is enough evidence to prosecute the accused, a trial will be opened. The case involves jewels that were received by Bolsonaro during official trips and should have been returned to state assets upon leaving office.
Among the accused in this case are Bolsonaro’s former aide-de-camp Mauro Cid and lawyer Frederick Wassef, who allegedly traveled to the US in an attempt to repurchase the jewels after they were demanded back by the state. Bolsonaro has also been charged in another case involving fraud in obtaining a vaccination certificate against Covid-19. Mauro Cid’s confession played a key role in this matter as well.
In addition to these legal challenges, Bolsonaro is also under investigation for his involvement in a coup plot to annul the electoral victory of his opponent in 2022 and retain power. Alongside criminal investigations, he faces scrutiny from the electoral justice system for abuses of political and economic power. Despite these challenges, Bolsonaro remains a controversial and divisive figure in Brazilian politics.
