A fire that occurred at a Lincoln business on Cornhusker Highway has resulted in road closures and damage to nearby businesses. The fire began near North 23rd Street and Cornhusker Highway at 2:35 p.m., with Lincoln Fire and Rescue (LFR) crews being dispatched to the scene following reports of an explosion and car fire. Upon arrival, smoke was seen coming from the building, which made it difficult for crews to contain the fire due to the strong southwest winds.
As a result of the intensity of the fire, parts of the building, including the roof and west wall, collapsed. Another nearby business suffered smoke and heat damage. Luckily, no injuries were reported. LFR is still investigating the cause of the fire, which caused $500,000 in damage to the building and $150,000 to its contents. The building is currently deemed unsafe due to the collapse and other hazards.
Despite this incident, Cornhusker Highway has reopened to traffic in both directions, with an overnight lane closure in place for safety purposes.
