Farmers Markets in North Country Communities: Supporting Local Businesses and Strengthening Community Ties.

Farmers markets in several north country communities are opening this weekend, including the Carthage market on North Mechanic Street, which had its first day on Friday. Shoppers like Stephanie Clemons enjoy going from stand to stand, supporting the vendors who work hard all week to prepare for market day. Bruce Johnson, owner of Martin Road North Gardens, emphasized the importance of supporting small businesses like his at these markets, where every sale can make a big difference.

Cornell Cooperative Extension has released its annual local food guide for Jefferson County to help people keep track of farmers markets in the area. This guide lists all the farmers markets happening throughout the summer, making it easier for residents to support local producers and businesses. Tina Lanier, president of the Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the importance of shopping local to support the local economy, especially during times when businesses may be struggling.

The Carthage market will be open every Friday until September 27, giving residents plenty of opportunities to support local vendors and find fresh, locally-sourced products. Lanier encouraged people to visit the market regularly, noting that there may be new vendors or products on different weeks. Supporting farmers markets like the one in Carthage not only benefits local businesses but also helps to strengthen the community as a whole.

Farmers markets provide an excellent opportunity for shoppers to connect with their community while supporting local producers and businesses. By shopping locally at these markets, residents can help sustain small businesses and contribute to a thriving local economy while also enjoying fresh and locally-sourced products. Whether you’re looking for fresh produce or artisanal goods, farmers markets are a great way to support your community while enjoying delicious food and drink options.
