On Tuesday, the York County Sheriff’s Office lost one of its most beloved and respected members – Gabby, a legendary K-9 who served for nearly a decade. As news of her passing spread throughout the community, many were left heartbroken at the loss of this unique and irreplaceable canine hero.
Before being taken to a veterinarian, Gabby was honored in the morning by YCSO K-9 team members, Rock Hill Police K-9 Team members, and former handlers. They gathered to pay their respects to the brave tracking bloodhound who had an impressive career filled with successes and accolades.
Sheriff Kevin Tolson spoke about Gabby’s legacy, saying, “This is heart-crushing news to many in law enforcement and the York County community. Gabby was a unique and irreplaceable K-9 who had an impressive career. Throughout her time of service, Gabby was responsible for over 300 captures of suspects and locating hundreds of missing individuals.”
Gabby’s bravery was recognized in 2018 when she became the first dog to receive the YCSO Medal of Valor for her actions during a shooting incident where her handler, Sgt. Randy Clinton, was shot in the line of duty. Clinton expressed his gratitude for Gabby’s heroism saying “She was a good one; if she only caught one suspect, she did her job. She was an asset to the citizens of York County and will be missed.”
Gabby’s contributions to law enforcement will not be forgotten as she served as a full-time tracking K-9 for nine years before retiring at ten-and-a-half years old. In addition to her work as a tracking K-9, Gabby also mothered a litter of puppies some
