Exploring the Intersection of Culture and Fishing: A Journey Through Pacific Coastal Mexico with Dr. Russ McGoodwin”.

Dr. Russ McGoodwin, a renowned cultural anthropologist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Colorado-Boulder, will be presenting on “Cultural Anthropology in Pacific Coastal Mexico” at the Central Colorado Humanists Sunday Science program on July 7, 2024. The event takes place at the Scout Hut in Salida, starting at 10:00 a.m., and is open to everyone for free.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. McGoodwin has dedicated himself to researching fishing communities and fisheries-management policies with a particular emphasis on social and economic lives of villagers worldwide. He has held positions at prestigious institutions such as the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Dr. McGoodwin’s study in a small, impoverished rural village on Mexico’s Pacific coast revealed how state and regional policies promoting the export of marine resources have contributed to ongoing poverty and degradation of marine ecosystems. With decades of experience working in fishing communities globally, he has been committed to developing fisheries-management policies that prioritize the well-being and food security of small-scale fishing communities worldwide.

The Central Colorado Humanists sponsor Sunday Science on the first Sunday of each month at the Scout Hut in Salida, providing informative presentations on various science topics accessible to both scientists and non-scientists alike. This program is an excellent opportunity to learn more about cultural anthropology in Pacific Coastal Mexico from one of the most experienced researchers in this field today. Don’t miss it!
