Engine Technology Forum Urges EPA to Prioritize Growth of Renewable Fuel Volumes in Letter and National Education Campaign

2 min read

The Engine Technology Forum has emphasized the importance of low carbon fuels in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Executive Director Allen Schaeffer expressed concerns about the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s renewable fuel volume determinations, known as the Set Rule, stating that the current policy is not supporting growth in the biofuel industry.

The lack of supply of low carbon fuels is leading to missed opportunities in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and meeting climate goals. The Forum stresses the importance of giving consumers and fleets the choice to use these fuels in their vehicles, as every diesel engine, vehicle, and machine can benefit from using low carbon fuels. It is crucial to prioritize the growth of renewable fuel volumes in order to make progress towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving climate goals.

In a letter to EPA Administrator Michael Regan, the Forum urged the agency to propose and finalize robust, growth-oriented 2026 Renewable Fuel Standard volumes by November. This is crucial not only for the economy but also for the environment, as low carbon fuels immediately reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Forum has also launched a national education campaign to raise awareness about the importance of growth-oriented renewable fuel volumes.

Disappointing future volumes for biomass-based diesel in the Renewable Fuel Standard have led to job losses and production shutdowns, impacting workers across the country. The engine technology industry needs a clear signal from policymakers that they are committed to growing renewable fuel volumes so that businesses can plan accordingly and invest in new technologies that support this goal.
