Emma Raducanu Skips Olympics for Surgery Recovery and Andy Murray Returns in Tokyo’s Tennis Showdown

2 min read

Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, has opted not to represent Great Britain at the upcoming Olympics this summer. Instead, two-time gold medalist Andy Murray will be competing in Paris. Raducanu is still recovering from surgery on her wrists and ankle, making her ineligible for the Olympics at this time.

The 21-year-old tennis player had expressed how much it meant to her to be part of a British team at the Olympics but felt that it was not the right timing for her this summer. Head of GB’s Olympic tennis team, Iain Bates, understood and supported Raducanu’s decision.

Meanwhile, Murray has been given an ITF place for what may be his final tournament at the age of 37. Joining him in the men’s singles will be Cameron Norrie, Jack Draper, and Dan Evans. Katie Boulter is the only British woman who has qualified by ranking for the Games. Murray and Dan Evans have also been nominated for the men’s doubles, along with Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski. Boulter and Heather Watson, as well as Harriet Dart and Maia Lumsden, have been nominated for the women’s doubles.

The Olympic tennis tournament at Roland Garros will take place from 27 July to 4 August, with competitions in women’s singles, men’s singles, women’s doubles, men’s doubles
