Double Tragedy: Two Teenagers Shot Dead by Law Enforcement Officers in California, Sparking Concerns over Mental Health Crises Handling

On April 3, 2024, a tragic incident occurred in Victorville, California. San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus reported that sheriff’s deputies had shot and killed a 17-year-old boy with mental health issues. The teen had been undergoing treatment at a hospital after cutting himself and was being transferred to a mental health facility at the time of the incident.

According to Sheriff Dicus, the boy had caused trouble previously at the residence where his sisters reside. When he threatened to harm himself, deputies forcibly entered the bathroom and attempted to apprehend him. However, during the encounter, the teen was holding a knife and ended up being shot by the deputies. Despite their best efforts to save him, he ultimately died from his injuries.

This incident is just one of many that have raised concerns about how law enforcement should handle mental health crises involving troubled youth. In a separate incident less than a month prior, another teenager, 15-year-old Ryan Gainer, was shot and killed by San Bernardino deputies after he allegedly threatened family members and chased a deputy with a garden hoe.

Sheriff Dicus has emphasized the need for better access to mental health services for troubled youth. He called for options other than law enforcement in handling mental health crises and urged people to seek help before it’s too late.
