Del Ray vs. Old Town Softball Battle: Title on the Line in Annual event

2 min read

The 6th Annual Del Ray vs. Old Town Softball Battle is set to take place on Thursday, May 23 at Simpson Field. With the title on the line, Del Ray businesses are determined to defend their crown against Old Town in this annual event.

Mayor Justin Wilson will kick off the game by throwing the first pitch at Eugene Simpson Park at 6 p.m. The game will consist of five innings and will also feature food trucks, ice cream, and draft beer from Port City Brewing Company.

Old Town team captain Trae Lamond, owner of Chadwicks, is confident in his team’s ability to win, despite the weather forecast predicting a 50% chance of rain. He jokingly stated that they plan to outscore Del Ray and make them shake in their yoga pants. On the other hand, Del Ray team captain Bill Blackburn is determined to retain the John Porter Cup for the third consecutive year. He believes his players are well-prepared and ready for the challenge.

Longtime umpire Dana Lawhorne, Alexandria’s retired sheriff, will not be officiating this year’s game but will instead provide commentary from the broadcast booth. In the past, Lawhorne ejected Blackburn from the game for challenging one of his calls. Despite the playful banter between the teams, both sides are excited to compete and showcase their skills on the field.
