In recent news, Consumers Energy in Michigan has announced plans to invest nearly $24 million in improving electric reliability. This investment includes deploying almost 3,000 line sensors and over 100 automatic transfer reclosers (ATRs) throughout 2024. The goal is to ultimately restore power within 24 hours or less as part of Consumers Energy’s Reliability Roadmap.
As the vice president of electric operations at Consumers Energy, Chris Laird emphasized the importance of new technology in making the grid more reliable for their close to 2 million Michigan customers. This investment in smart devices will help in serving Michigan homes and businesses more reliably every hour of every day. A record number of smart devices will be rolled out this year, with ATRs proving to be beneficial in preventing outages.
The ATRs have demonstrated their effectiveness in preventing hundreds of thousands of outages in the past few years. They work by detecting power loss and automatically rerouting power in another direction. Line sensors are also being deployed as part of this initiative to predict grid issues and alert crews proactively to the location of any problems.
Consumers Energy is Michigan’s largest energy provider, serving 6.8 million residents with natural gas and electricity. The deployment of smart technologies is a key component of their Reliability Roadmap, which aims to strengthen and upgrade the electric grid for the future.
