President Gustavo Petro of Colombia has announced that the country will sever diplomatic relations with Israel in response to the Israeli Army’s offensive against the Gaza Strip. The decision was made during a rally held in the Plaza de Bolívar in Bogotá on Workers’ Day, where Petro accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of genocide.
Petro emphasized the importance of standing with Palestine, stating that if Palestine dies, humanity dies. He called for international solidarity against genocide, condemning the Israeli government for its actions. This decision comes after Israel failed to comply with a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire during Ramadan.
In response, Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz criticized Petro on social media, accusing him of supporting Hamas and their violent actions. Despite this, Israel emphasized that the warm relations between the two countries will continue, regardless of Petro’s decision.
President Petro has been actively involved in promoting peace efforts between Israel and Palestine since last October’s escalation of violence. He has proposed a peace commission and called for the release of hostages held in Gaza. Despite criticism from Israel, Petro remains committed to standing with Palestine and advocating for an end to the conflict.
