Chinese Vice-Premier Ding Xuexiang emphasized the importance of promoting the spirit of scientists and harnessing wisdom and strength to establish China as a sci-tech powerhouse. This message was conveyed during the main event of China’s 2024 National Science and Technology Week and Beijing Science and Technology Week in Beijing. Ding, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, urged the need to uphold scientists’ patriotic, innovative, practical, dedicated, collaborative, and educative spirit to cultivate a society that respects science and encourages innovation.

During his visit to the Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ding toured the offices where renowned scientists Qian Xuesen and Guo Yonghuai once worked, explored the exhibition hall dedicated to the spirit of scientists, and observed the laboratory for testing the mechanical properties of materials. Reflecting on the accomplishments of earlier generations of scientists operating under challenging circumstances, Ding stressed the importance of deep patriotism and commitment to serving the country in achieving great national rejuvenation. He called on more researchers to embrace the mission and responsibility of enhancing China’s scientific and technological self-reliance and capabilities.
