Chiefs Cornerback Depth: Filling the Void Left by L’Jarius Sneed’s Departure

The Kansas City Chiefs’ defense improved significantly last season, becoming the strongest it has been in Patrick Mahomes’ tenure. However, tough decisions had to be made in the offseason, including trading away L’Jarius Sneed to Tennessee. This move has led to concerns about the team’s cornerback depth, as Sneed was a valuable member of the group.

Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports believes that the departure of Sneed has highlighted the cornerback depth as the team’s biggest issue. While Trent McDuffie emerged as a versatile starter in the secondary, his new partner Joshua Williams has only started six games in his career. This puts pressure on the safeties to step up and fill the void left by Sneed. Despite these challenges, under the guidance of defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, the cornerback group is expected to be ready to perform.

The rise of McDuffie as a lockdown starter and Williams’ emergence as a dependable depth player have been positive developments for the Chiefs. These players have contributed to the team’s success in previous seasons, especially during their Super Bowl runs. As offseason speculation continues, it is clear that the cornerback group will have a different look this year. However, the Chiefs have shown faith in Spagnuolo’s defensive expertise, reflected in their mantra on their defense’s t-shirts: “In Spags We Trust.”
