Celebrating a Decade of Excellence: Gamma Tau Chapter of Delta Omega Honorary Society at George Mason University Marks Its 10th Anniversary and Launches New Initiatives in National Public Health Week 2024

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the establishment of the Gamma Tau chapter of The Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health at George Mason University. The mission of Delta Omega is to promote excellence in the field of public health and improve the health of individuals in the United States and globally. Each year, select graduate and undergraduate students who have excelled academically are inducted into Delta Omega during induction ceremonies.

Over the past decade, George Mason has inducted a total of 108 Master’s students, 39 undergraduate students, and two faculty members (Dr. Laura Poms and Dr. Lila Fleming) into the Gamma Tau chapter of Delta Omega. This year, the chapter will be inducting its first cohort of PhD students at the induction ceremony.

Carolyn Drews-Botsch, professor and chair of Global and Community Health, expressed pride in the academic excellence of George Mason’s students and faculty. As one of the oldest colleges in Virginia, Mason continues to lead in education, research, and practice in public health.

Many Delta Omega alumni have gone on to pursue advanced education and exciting careers in public health. For example, Bianca Alba currently works as a Public Health Analyst at the Health Resources and Services Administration in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Abby Lilak, who earned her MS in Global Health at Mason, is now pursuing a PhD at the University of Florida after working with disease spread between animals and humans in Kenya. Taylor Thomas, another alum, credits her experience at Mason for sparking her passion for population health and is currently pursuing her Master of Public Health at George Washington University.

In addition to celebrating their tenth anniversary, George Mason’s Delta Omega chapter is taking part in National Public Health Week 2024 through volunteer service events with Patriot Pantry and Presidents Park Greenhouse.
