The 24-year-old Malian international, Mohamed Camara, has been suspended for four matches after covering up anti-homophobia messages on his shirt during a match for Monaco. On 19 May, during a game against Nantes in Ligue 1, Camara placed white tape over the campaign logo on his chest. This decision was made by the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) after Camara refused to “carry out one or more actions to raise awareness of the fight against homophobia.”
France’s sports minister, Amelie Oudea-Castera, expressed her strong stance on the situation and called for “the strongest sanctions” against Camara for his actions. All Ligue 1 clubs had worn the campaign logo on their kits on the final day of the season, with the rainbow emblem also displayed on team shirts. This initiative was organized by the LFP to raise awareness and promote inclusivity in French football.
The Malian Football Federation publicly supported Camara, stating that players are citizens whose fundamental rights should be protected. Monaco’s chief executive, Thiago Scuro, reiterated the club’s support for the LFP’s campaign and mentioned that they will discuss the situation with Camara internally. The club aims to address this issue and uphold the values of inclusivity and diversity in football.
