In San Luis Obispo, students at Sinsheimer Elementary School are taking part in a hands-on learning experience with the Build-A-Business Club. Recently, the club joined forces with a local business, Junk Girls, to create and sell products to raise money for a community project.
Their efforts were successful as they managed to raise $1,500 through their product sales. With this amount, the students collaborated with the Environmental Center of San Luis Obispo (ECOSLO) to plant three trees at Sinsheimer Park on Arbor Day. This initiative was part of ECOSLO’s Urban Tree Planning program, “Keys for Trees.”
Genevieve Palazzo and Sophia Bastidas, both 5th graders at Sinsheimer Elementary, expressed their excitement about the project. They were thrilled by the support and involvement of Junk Girls and ECOSLO in helping them make a positive impact on the environment and the community.
Grant Helete, ECOSLO’s program coordinator, emphasized the organization’s commitment to working with schools and organizations for similar projects. The tree planting at Sinsheimer Park is part of San Luis Obispo’s larger goal of achieving carbon-neutrality by 2035.
Overall, this collaboration between students, local businesses and environmental organizations highlights the power of community partnerships in promoting sustainability while also teaching valuable life skills in business management.
